Them Pigeons! iOS Game Review
Posted 03rd October, 2011 at 12:22 AM by Snapsniper

I recently chanced across Mojo Forest, an independent game development studio based in Singapore during one of their call outs for beta testers.

They have successfully developed and launched an iPhone game: Them Pigeons! I love the catchy title and the intended pun. The games visuals and art style really draws you in with a very impressive and polished look.

This game is simplistically fun with virtually no learning curve. Designed for gamers to jump right in, tapping on the screen releases a bird to fly over a park dweller invading your territory and you just need to tap the screen again to drop poop on him to score points. However, the poop is affected by wind and you will have to calculate when is the right time to launch your poop. It’s really cute to see the park dweller’s reaction of shifting around the bench every time some poop lands on his head.

There are 3 type of birds in the Them! Pigeons:

1. The Standard Bird

Mastering this bird is essential in excelling in Them Pigeons! This bird poops the standard poop affected by wind. A useful tip is to use the 2 lamp posts in the park which you can use as guides to aim your poop drop..

2. The Heavy Bird

This is in my opinion my favorite bird which appears 2 times every 4 shots. It poops a large ball of poop and is minimally affected by wind. This birds poop being bigger also offer more points when landed on the park dweller’s head

3. The Stork.

This bird is full of crap! Literally. It poops 3 droppings balls in a row consecutively.Appearing twice every time you hit a score of 30, the stork can be a double edge sword. It is especially rewarding if all 3 droppings lands on the park dweller’s head and scoring a huge number of points. However, you are penalized even if you hit with one dropping and miss the other 2, causing you to lose 2 lives. I had game sessions ended prematurely due to the appearance of this Them Stork!

The game is pretty addictive, especially with the combo system where if you hit the park dweller consecutively your score keeps snowballing up which really gave me a sense of achievement. I find it strangely relaxing to de-stress by playing this on the train on the way after a crappy day of work and releasing all the crap on the park dweller. (pun intended).

A minor gripe I have with the disappearing life indicator, which appears only when I lost life, my game session ended abruptly as I was too immersed in concentrating in dropping poop on the park dweller to actually keep track of the of my lives left. It could be due to the fact popular games like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and Ninjump all have live indicators always displayed in the user interface.

Them Pigeons! is also Open Feint compatible where you can compare your scores with your friends and globally using their leader boards. Bringing something refreshing to the IPhone App store, Them Pigeons! with its light hearted game play experience as it merges many familiar game elements into a very original game idea.  Them Pigeons! is free on the Iphone App store with the option to support indie gaming and disable advertisements for $0.99.

Mojo Forest is also curently developing other games where you can look forward to playing when released. Or if you cannot wait, feel free to drop by their studio to beta test by applying it here.
